The number one thing I recommend for my patients to do in the Winter to boost their immunity & stay healthy is making a BONE BROTH! What is a bone broth, you say? Well, its basically calcium & nutrient rich chicken or beef broth simmered with veggies & spices at a low temperature for several hours in a large stock pot or slow cooker. Sounds like something grandma used to make? Yes…Well, grandma was smart!!!

Medicinal Benefits of Bone Broth:

-Mineral rich ; high in Calcium, Magnesium, & Phosphorus

-Amino Acid rich

-Supports skin & hair health with its collagen rich content

-Improves connection tissue , improves digestive issues, & remineralizes teeth

-Inhibits neutrophil migration, which helps mitigate the side effects of head colds, flu, and upper respiratory infections

-Warms the digestion and strengthens the Spleen & the Kidneys in Chinese Medicine. Boosts the defensive Qi or Wei Qi against infections

Heres how you make it:

Slow Cooker Bone Broth ~

Ingredients:

2-3 lbs of bones from organic meat or 2 large roasted chicken carcasses

2 small onions

2 carrots

2 stalks of celery

2 tbs Apple Cider Vinegar

1 Bay leaf

1 head of garlic sliced in half

*Any other soup greens or spices you enjoy in soup (like parsley & thyme)

-Roughly chop all vegetables, leaving nutritious peels & skins on

-Add chicken or beef bones to a slow cooker

-Add all veggies & spices plus apple cider vinegar

-Cover with water so totally immersed

– Cook on low for 10-12 hrs

Voila! You can freeze batches, put some in mason jars or plastic containers.  Now you have a medicinal broth to add to all your recipes or just to drink on your own!  Feed this to your family several times a week to fortify the immune system!

ImageWhen the seasons change, it is very common & typical to see massive amounts of people coughing, sneezing, clearing their throats, etc. Everywhere. The workplace, the classroom, and your home! It is also common just to see people getting sick around the holidays; esp with the stress of holiday hustle & bustle. The first sign of a cold is usually a sore throat or pain in the back of the neck; if you don’t treat these symptoms immediately, there is usually no way to fight them from turning into something nastier!! Here are some natural tips for cold & flu season:

*Go get an Acupuncture treatment at your local clinic or private Acupuncturist immediately! The sooner the better. The practitioner will be able to give you Chinese herbal remedies & acupuncture to Kick it !

* Drink Peppermint tea. I love using peppermint essential oil because its SUPER concentrated & will cool down a sore throat/fever right away. 1 drop of peppermint oil is ALL YOU NEED… Add lemon & raw honey!

* Try to use a Neti Pot 1x a day if you are exposed to a lot of people & germs. This will clear out your sinus cavity and keep bacteria from clinging to your hairs in your nose.

* Homemade chicken stock or bone broth. Yes chicken soup works, the “Jewish penicillin”. There are many recipes on the web. Make sure you use organic, free- range chicken , adding scallions, & ginger (giving it extra immune boosting power).

* Use Young Livings Thieves products. They have spray, household cleaner, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, mouthwash, the Essential Oil and more. Thieves is a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary.  It kills 99.95% of airborne bacteria, viruses, and fungi. I would rub it on the bottoms of my feet, gargle with it, and diffuse it in an essential oils diffuser during cold season.

*If you do get sick, a great homemade cough syrup: (so much better than that chemical laden crap from the drugstore!!)

-1 drop of lemon Essential Oil

-1-2 drops of Thieves Essential Oil

-1 Drop of Frankincense

-1 drop of Peppermint

-1 teaspoon of honey

*to make a larger batch to put into a 6-8 oz glass jar, adjust to about 10 drops of lemon, 5 drops of Thieves, and however much you want of the Frankincense & peppermint

Why Essential Oils?

I was recently speaking with a colleague of mine who is also an Acupuncturist. After hearing me explain various reasons why essential oils are amazing, wonderful for your health, blah blah.. she was still concerned because her own acupuncturist had told her not to ‘mess with them.’ In fact, even after our talk, she was even afraid to order them. I was shocked by this statement because never in my life had I heard such a thing, especially after becoming involved heavily, as I have been, in aromatherapy and using Young Living Essential Oils. Then, I stopped myself from replying in a negative way. Of course ! Not many people use THERAPEUTIC GRADE essential oils in their practices or at home,or even know what that phrase means.

Most essential oils you can purchase at your nearest health food store are fragrance grade, NOT THERAPEUTIC, at all. They smell good, like grandma’s apple pie smells good. But so does perfume. Would you drink it? Put it on your children & pets?  No. Most people have no idea what the difference is. And that’s okay! Just know if the price is cheap, cheap, cheap for the product you are buying, you can bet its not real. The healthcare & beauty product industry is a multi-billion dollar arena. The FDA does not regulate any personal hygiene products, cosmetics, etc. So ,really, companies can put whatever types of fillers & chemicals in their products and none of us would know the difference. Our skin, being our largest organ, ‘feeds.’ Feeds what…did you just say feeds?! Yes! Our body’s skin eats! You don’t put on your skin what you wouldn’t put in your mouth! Or let in build up in your Liver or lymphatic system! Young Living is actually working on changing this, so that there are standards for purity in the essential oil industry

That being said, most essential oils and their products are only really required to have 5% of the actual plant substance in the bottle. What is the other 95% you say? Synthetics, perfumes, byproducts, chemicals…ew…. It can smell like Lavender, but only actually contain 5% lavender in the bottle! Or have other products that make it smell more ‘lavndery.’ Companies do this because the products is cheaper to produce & they figure most people don’t know the difference anyway.  If you find Frankincense Essential Oil in the health food store that is $5 you can bet your butt its not real!! To call something an essential oil, 100% pure, etc. there needs to be a certain percentage of compounds. Even if it was synthesized in a lab to meet those compound requirements, it can still be called 100% pure…crazy huh!?

Young Living is the world leader in therapeutic grade essential oils and essential oil medicine. They have a process called “seed to seal” that ensures the quality of the seedling, planting process on rich non-toxic soil, correct harvesting, and distillation is 100% pure, organic, and most importantly scientifically accurate to get the most healing properties out of each drop. They grow, distill, and manufacture THEIR OWN oils.. they are not just brokers . They are one of the only Essential Oil companies in the world that will let their distributors & customers visit their farms & distilleries to see the whole process in action.

Anyways, that’s my spiel on that. Being a healthcare practitioner, I use them confidently on complete strangers, patients, and my own family knowing that they will heal not harm. Contact me if you want more information on this or how to order essential oils, I’d love to help you get the healing power of essential oils into your home!

We all know how the flu bug has been rampant during this winter season. In fact, many of us have been sick more than 2 times over so far these last few months. I have never seen anything like this in my 28 years of life. I really think it has a lot to do with our food supply; antibiotic, hormone-ridden animal products…pesticide ridden produce…food allergies ( esp to gluten). Maybe we are just on overload at this point; not giving our body what it needs to stay clean, detoxified, or even have a functioning immune system. Everyone is racing out to get flu shots, while I know many patients & associates who have gotten them & still get the flu. Or the shot makes them sicker. I am not advising anyone on what to do & not to do, medically speaking. But there are ways you can keep healthy through lifestyle, acupuncture, and essential oils to boost your immune system. Here’s how the Chinese stay healthy in the cold weather:

1.) In Chinese Medicine, as well as being a naturally intuitive concept, Winters are a more sensitive & inward time. It is the time that corresponds with the energy of the the Kidneys & Urinary Bladder. This is the time to get PLENTY of rest, good nutrition, relaxation, and sleep. They say go to bed with the setting of the sun and rise later in the morning.

2.) Since the weather is colder in the winter, you need to adjust your diet and eat foods that produce more heat. Don’t go heavy on the carbs or portions because we are naturally less active in the winter (as we should be) so we need be careful of putting on extra lbs. Foods include: little to no fruit, because its not naturally grown in this non-tropical climate during the winter months; steamed/baked/sauteed vegetables, soups are especially warming & good. Root vegetables are especially right for the winter diet. Ginger ( in tea and as a spice) & garlic & cayenne pepper are good and add heat to meals. Beans are a good source of warm protein. Red aduki beans nourish the kidneys. Cooked whole grains suck as millet & buckwheat are good for the intestine& elimination. Ocean foods like fresh fish & seaweed are also good because they nourish the kidneys as well.

3.)Deep breathing exercises, Yoga, and Tai Chi are excellent forms of exercise for the winter months. In the winter, inner strengthening is important, especially clearing the body of excessive stagnation.

4.) Utilize essential oils at home to keep you and your family healthy! Young Living’s Thieves Blend consists of Clove Oil (Syzgium aromaticum) ,Lemon Oil (Citrus Limon)
Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum), Eucalyptus Oil (Eucalyptus radiata) and
Rosemary Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis) all of which are antisepctic, antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal. Rub some on the bottoms of your feet, take 2-6 drops internally, or diffuse liberally in your home or office. This is a natural way to prevent the flu & is also strong against a mutant strain of the virus!!! (The flu shot is not resistant to a mutating virus & may be harmful to small children & the elderly)

5.) Get Acupuncture! With regular treatments, you and your acupuncturist can boost your immune system through needle stimulation, moxibustion, and herbal therapies. They can even help you kick a virus out if you feel like you are getting sick. Make your appointment today!

Since Father’s Day is drawing near, why not discuss some ways in which essential oils can improve men’s health & quality of life! In this post, I will be discussing some common health issues men face and how the power of medicinal plants/ essential oils can help!

TOP MEN’S HEALTH CONCERNS

HEART DISEASE
Some facts of interest:
• Although heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women, almost twice as many males die of conditions that affect the cardiovascular system
• One in four men has some form of heart disease. It is the leading cause of death.
• Heart disease begins to manifest itself about 10 years earlier in men than in women
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), risk factors for heart disease include:
• Increasing age
• Male sex
• Family history and race. A family history of heart disease is associated with a higher risk of coronary artery disease, especially if a close relative developed heart disease at an early age. Your risk is highest if your father or a brother was diagnosed with heart disease before age 55, or your mother or a sister developed it before age 65. African-Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and some Asian Americans also have a higher risk
• Smoking
• High blood cholesterol
• High blood pressure
• Physical inactivity
• Obesity and overweight
• Diabetes

Young Living Products that can help:
NingXia Red Juice – NingXia wolfberries have the highest known levels of polysaccharides, documented cardioprotective, reduces inflammation (which contributes to heart disease), brings oxygen to the cells and helps separate them from being “sticky”, detoxifies the blood and allows it to flow more freely.

CardiaCare – contains ingredients that have been scientifically tested for their abilities to support and strengthen the cardiovascular system ~ helichrysum, ylang ylang, CoQ10, wolfberry powder, hawthorn berry and vitamin E.

Aroma Life Oil Blend– Improves cardiovascular, lymphatic and circulatory systems. Lowers high blood pressure and reduces stress.
STROKE
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, spilling blood into the spaces surrounding brain cells. Brain cells die when they no longer receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood or when they are damaged by sudden bleeding into or around the brain. When blood flow to the brain is interrupted, some brain cells die immediately, while others remain at risk for death.
Controllable Risk Factors:
• High Blood Pressure
• Atrial Fibrillation
• High Cholesterol
• Diabetes
• Atherosclerosis
• Circulation Problems
• Tobacco Use and Smoking
• Alcohol Use
• Physical Inactivity
• Obesity
Uncontrollable risk factors include being over age 55, being male, being African American, Hispanic or Asian/Pacific Islander, or having a family history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
Stroke Risk Calculator: http://my.clevelandclinic.org/p2/stroke-risk-calculator.aspx
Symptoms of stroke appear suddenly. Watch for these symptoms and be prepared to act quickly for yourself or on behalf of someone you are with:
• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
• Sudden confusion, trouble talking, or understanding speech.
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination.
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
If you suspect you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms indicative of a stroke, do not wait. Call 911 emergency immediately. There are now effective therapies for stroke that must be administered at a hospital, but they lose their effectiveness if not given within the first 3 hours after stroke symptoms appear. Every minute counts!
Young Living essential oils can be used topically to help strengthen the integrity of capillary walls. Helichrysum, cistus, and nutmeg have anti-clotting properties and can be used as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of strokes due to blood clots.

PROSTATE
About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.
Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. Nearly two thirds are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 67.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. About 1 man in 36 will die of prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, more than 2.5 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.
The biggest risk factors seem to be age and family history.

Aside from cancer, the other concern is inflammation of the prostate. Symptoms include frequent urination (6-10 times during the night ), weak urine stream, painful urination, and decreased sex drive.

Before they are 60, half of all men will have inflammation of the prostate and by the age of 80, 90% of men will have enlarged prostate.

Young Living’s Prostate Health is uniquely formulated for men concerned with supporting the male glandular system and maintaining healthy, normal prostate function. Prostate Health is an essential oil supplement featuring powerful saw palmetto and pumpkin seed oil—ingredients known for their support of a healthy prostate gland. A proprietary blend of pure geranium, fennel, myrtle, lavender, and peppermint essential oils provides the body with key anti-inflammatory components. These precision-delivery vegetable softgels quickly absorb into the system, thereby supporting healthy inflammation response and normal urinary tract function. For maximum benefit, Prostate Health should be taken consistently over time.

LOW TESTOSTERONE
Testosterone is a major male sex hormone that determines many male sexual characteristics, such as muscle mass, hair growth and the development of a lower voice. This male hormone is important for regulating metabolism, increasing the rate of fat breakdown in men. It also helps in sperm maturity and contributes to sex drive in both men and women.
Aging causes many changes in the body, including the steady decline of testosterone levels. The levels of testosterone in your body start to gradually decrease when you reach 30 years of age.
Signs and symptoms of low testosterone include:
• Decreased sex drive
• Erectile dysfunction
• Reduced energy level
• Reduced strength and endurance levels
• Sleep problems
• Emotional problems including sadness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and depression
• Increased breast size and tenderness
• Decrease in the amount of body hair
• Decreased penis or testicle size
• Loss of muscle mass
• Weight increase around the middle of the body
If your doctor suspects that your testosterone level is low, a blood test can be done to measure your testosterone level.
Omega-3 in fish oil is an important component for the production of hormones. It is also excellent for keeping your cardiovascular system and heart healthy. Omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fat that is classified as “good fat.” Unlike other types of fat, fish oils don’t elevate blood pressure or clog your blood vessels. In fact, they do exactly the opposite and clear the body of high cholesterol and bad fat.
Young Living products that can help:
Omega Blue – clinically-proven dose of omega-3 fatty acids, enhanced with a preservation system blending pure blue chamomile, lemongrass and close essential oils to increase shelf life and ensure freshness.

Endogize – helps to maintain a healthy endocrine system, which is a collection of ‘glands’ that produce hormones. According to Gary Young, you can take this supplement up to 6 times per day.

SclarEssence Essential Oil
Sclaressence – 1 cap, 4-5 times/week – raises testosterone in Men
Specifically designed to support the hormones, it will increase estradiol (estrogen) and testosterone levels when taken as a dietary supplement. It may also reduce bloating, balance the pH of the body and improve digestion.
This oil as a supplement will help support the male and female hormonal system. It will increase testosterone levels in men or increase estrogen levels in women. It is a natural fertility enhancer and will help with both male and female infertility.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) has anti-convulsive, anti-fungal, sedative, soothing and nerve tonic properties. It is balancing to the hormones, and enhances the dream state.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and digestive aid properties. It blocks pain and enhances the other effects of the oils.
Fennel (Pelargonium graveolens) has anti-parasitic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-toxin, diuretic and analgesic properties. It is used for diabetes, cancer, obesity, fluid retention, hormones and digestive problems.
Sage Lavender or Spanish Sage (Salvia lavandulifolia) has anti-depressant, astringent, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties. It has shown to increase both estradiol and testosterone levels. It is emotionally balancing and is can be used for depression and stress.

Other blends to consider are: Mister, Endoflex and Dragon Time essential oil blends.

MALE HORMONE IMBALANCE

As men age, their DHEA and testosterone levels decline. Conversely, levels of dihydrotesteroone (DHT) increase, contributing to prostate enlargement and hair loss.

Because pregenelone is a master hormone from which all hormones are created, men can directly benefit from all trans-dermal pregenelone creams as a way of jump-starting sagging DHEA levels.

Herbs such as saw palmetto and Pygeum africanum can prevent the conversion of testosterone into DHT, thereby reducing prostate enlargement and slowing hair loss.

MALE IMPOTENCE

Impotence, the inability to perform sexually, may be caused by physical limitations due to an accident or injury or by psychological factors, such as inhibitions, trauma, stress, etc. Male impotence is often linked to problems with the prostate or prostate surgery. If impotence is related to psychological trauma or unresolved emotional issues, it may be necessary to deal with these issues before any meaningful progress can be made.

There is an extensive historical basis that fragrance may amplify desire and create a mood that can overcome impotence. In fact, aromas such as rose and jasmine have been used since antiquity to attract the opposite sex and create a romantic atmosphere.

Modern research has shown that the aroma of some essential oils can stimulate the emotional center of the brain. This may explain why essential oils have the potential to help people overcome impotence based on emotional factors or inhibitions.

Obesity is one of the most common problems found today with adults as well as children. Possible causes of obesity may be excess intake of junk foods, lack of exercise and changing lifestyle. Obesity not only affects your appearance, but it gives rise to plenty of health related problems. That’s why, it is advised by the doctors to keep body weight under control. Nowadays, many people have become cautious about their health and they are adopting various ways to lose excess body weight. Some may go for diet control, some may join gyms or some try different medications. Acupuncture for weight loss is one of the most popular and safe methods. As it is a natural way to reduce weight, it imparts no side effects on your body.

What is Acupuncture?

Before you go for acupuncture for weight reduction, you need to know a little more about acupuncture and its effects. Acupuncture, originated from China thousands years back, is one of the oldest and most commonly used treatment methods used throughout the world. This technique involves insertion of hair-thin needles through skin at strategic points to various depths. Human body has about 2,000 acupuncture points and every point is related to various healing attributes. Acupuncture technique can be applied as an alternative treatment for a wide range of diseases such as depression, drug abuse, insomnia and weight loss. Ear acupuncture can be effective applied to treat organs like kidneys, nervous system, liver and lung. When acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on skin, then release of endorphin hormone is stimulated which has relaxing and calming effect. It enables you to deal with frustration, stress and anxiety, which can be triggering factors for overeating and indulging in fattening foods. However, you need to take this treatment from skilled acupuncturist.

Acupuncture for Weight Loss

Among different methods of weight reduction, acupuncture is found to be very effective as it works in a natural way. In this therapy, long, thin, sterilized needles are inserted into the body, which stimulate release of endorphin offering relaxing and calming effect. It can control binging, which may originate from stress. Excessive eating results from excess stress, anxiety and frustration, which may be a major cause of obesity. Acupuncture can control stress and anxiety and keep you relaxed so that your tendency of overeating is reduced.

How Acupuncture helps for Weight reduction?

An acupuncturist selects treatment points depending upon patient’s diagnosis. Acupuncture needles are inserted into these points and kept for about 30-45 minutes per session. Acupuncture treatment focuses on modification of lifestyle in developing a weight loss program. It deals with metabolic condition that may be responsible for weight gain. Acupuncture helps to reduce food cravings, increase metabolism and improve body-wide circulation. It is more specific to decrease cholesterol levels and overall body weight by mobilizing energy stores. Acupuncture also helps to reduce anxiety, reenergize body, suppress appetite and control overeating.

Acupuncture points for weight loss are selected to improve overall health keeping the objective of improving blood circulation and relaxing the nervous system. Various acupuncture points are selected for each treatment, as there may be different symptoms. Generally, treatment is scheduled once or twice a week and continued for 8-12 weeks until aim weight reduction is achieved. It involves a combination of body and auricular (ear) acupuncture, herbs and supplements, breathing exercises, abdominal massage as well as food and lifestyle recommendations.

Ear acupuncture is especially found to very effective for weight reduction. Auricular acupuncture points are stimulated using small tacks and then seed-sized beads or magnets are taped to these points in order to enhance the effectiveness. Some most commonly used auricular points are shenmen, small intestine, hunger point, mouth and endocrine point. When patient unnecessarily gets food cravings in between the meals, then mild pressure is applied or ear staples are rubbed. It stimulates release of endorphin that helps to relax and achieve control over food craving.

Some common points selected by experienced acupuncturist to effectively lose weight safely and within short period of time are thyroid (to slow metabolism), mouth (for impulsive eater), stomach (obese), spleen (sugar and hormonal imbalance) and endocrine (ability to gain weight because of water retention). Acupuncture for weight loss is definitely a wonderful method, however you should be cautious about the acupuncturist is skilled and experienced and acupuncture needles are properly sterilized.

Maintaining healthy body weight is a must for everyone and you may opt for acupuncture, which is a promising method for weight loss.

One in five women of childbearing age will experience fibroids or pelvic tumors, according to the National Institute of Health. Fibroids vary in size and location within the uterus and also in number. While some women with fibroids have no symptoms, other women may have pain and bleeding, which is commonly associated with the condition. Electronic acupuncture, an acupuncture treatment where electronic stimulus is applied to acupuncture needles to provide a stronger affect, is an alternative option to conventional medical treatment for fibroids. Regardless of the treatment method chosen, only a doctor can diagnose uterine fibroids.

Uterine Fibroids

The cause of uterine fibroids is unknown but is thought to be affected by estrogen levels. Fibroids are usually benign and may even go undetected by a woman and her doctor during her entire life. Fibroids usually enlarge during the childbearing years but usually shrink by the time she has gone through menopause. Most commonly, fibroids are found in women over the age of 30, and though it is rare, in younger women under 20. African Americans are more commonly affected than Caucasians.

Since it is possible for your general practitioner to misdiagnose adenomyosis or ovarian cysts as uterine fibroids, an internal exam by your gynecologist is best to confirm the diagnosis. A variety of simple tests such as an ultrasound or hysteroscopy, a small telescope used to look inside the uterus, can usually be done quickly and in your doctor’s office. If you have larger fibroids, your doctor may want to do an MRI.

Electronic Acupuncture

Electronic stimulation was introduced in China in 1934. It was created as a substitute for hand manipulation normally performed by the acupuncturist. This method allows all of the needles to be stimulated simultaneously for the entire treatment without the acupuncturist getting fatigued. It also allows for an exact frequency to be delivered and stronger stimulation to the area without risk of injury to the surrounding skin and tissues.
Many types of acupuncture are employed in the effort to treat fibroids, though traditional acupuncture is the most common. Though the department of acupuncture at Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine believes more evidence is required to establish the efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatments for uterine fibroids, many acupuncturists and their patients report varying degrees of success.

Treatment

Treatment for fibroids varies based on the practitioner and patient needs.
Your acupuncturist may choose to simply use acupuncture points, or if appropriate, she will use these points in conjunction with electronic stimulation. The decision to use electronic stimulation is a made on a case by case basis by the treating acupuncturist. Certain factors including a patient’s age and body type as well as size and number of fibroids will be used to determine the best treatment method. For example, while a patient with larger fibroids may best benefit from electronic acupuncture, the stimulation may be too intense or painful for the patient.

Function

Electro-stimulation is added to the treatment by attaching small wires to the needles in order to send small micro-currents to the surrounding area. In the case of uterine fibroids, this is done in an effort to move blood and “qi” or energy in the area in and around the uterus in an effort to reduce their size. This is rarely painful and some patients even find the sensation enjoyable. An average of 9 volts to 45 volts is used in treatment. The power is equivalent to that of a watch battery. A standard treatment with electronic acupuncture usually lasts 10 to 20 minutes and rarely exceeds 30 minutes.

Safety

Acupuncture with electronic stimulation is considered safe with minimal risks when administered by a qualified practitioner. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognizes acupuncture needles as a class II medical device. Acupuncture — including that with electro-stimulation — is never to be self-administered for safety reasons; improper use can result in injury and infection. Electro-stimulation is contraindicated for patients who are pregnant, wear a pacemaker or have a history of seizures.

Considerations

Ask your doctor if acupuncture is an appropriate treatment option for you. It is also best to find a licensed acupuncturist with experience treating uterine fibroids. If you aren’t familiar with a licensed acupuncturist ask your general practitioner to refer you to one. The acupuncturist you see should be able to tell you how many sessions you’ll need and whether your treatments are covered by your insurance. Though acupuncture may be effective for your condition, it’s not a substitute for the medical care provided by your doctor.
